Beautiful and elegant Cinderella. She’s every little girl’s dream. The scullery maid meeting her Prince and being swept away to a magical wedding with pagentry, flowers and… a red dress?

And she got married at a brewery? Isn’t all of that taboo for a wedding?

How about a dress that is more peach than white? And shorts with deck shoes?

Or even blue jeans? Surely not!

Would a blue dress be beyond imagination?

Or this Roaring ’20’s inspired flapper dress?

And black on your wedding day?

Wait a second, that does seem pretty elegant…

This “steam punk” look was original and very cool.

And so were these zombies.

The point is, if you want to follow tradition and wear a white dress, then of course you should do so. But elopements and micro weddings can also be a place where you buck traditions and just be who you really are. And lets be honest, most wedding dresses are not that comfortable to wear, and can be difficult to walk in on a sidewalk – much less to hike around a mountain in.

(Caveat: One bride recently had to cut her photo session short because the wedding dress she had on was so tight and uncomfortable that she was on the verge of not being able to breathe and even of getting ill. Everyone was concerned that she was having a heart attack!).

Also, since most or our locations (venues) are outdoor and mountain locations, the white dress is the one most apt to pick up dirt from the trails and look dingy toward the end of the photo shoot – especially if it has a long train. That being said, white dresses usually look amazing in photo shoots as they offer really great contrast with the scenery. Yes, they can really look amazing, but so can other choices.

Here’s Simple I Do’s tips for making your wedding wardrobe selection…

1. Do you want a traditional look? Then white dresses for the bride and suits/tuxedos for your partner. That’s easy.

2. If not, what theme would best represent your personality? Western? Cosplay? Viking? Roaring 20’s (like the couple above)? Pirates? Super casual (sun dress, beach shorts and flip flops)? It’s your party, so own it and go for it.

3. If you are wearing a dress of any kind a mountain elopement or micro wedding, make sure it is comfortable to walk in, breathe in, and move in. Also that it will be warm enough if it is a cool day, or cool enough if the weather is exceedingly warm.

Out of curiosity, do you know when white dresses became popular for weddings? Did you know that until the 1900’s, most brides couldn’t afford a “wedding dress” so they just wore their best outfit? https://www.almanac.com/content/why-are-wedding-dresses-white
